Remember to Remember

Staying focused is difficult.

Staying on track can be challenging when at work, while doing house cleaning, doing the taxes, and even while parenting.

Perhaps it’s never more tough to do than when it comes to our own daily walk with God…we so easily walk off of the way the Lord has charted out for us.

This is probably why one of the themes of the Bible is Remember! Remember! Remember the Lord your God! In fact, the Bible issues a call to “remember” over 200 times! Most of those have to do with a command to remember God and His works for His people. Others have to do with remembering the sin and old life they were rescued from. Still others call them to bring back to memory how God has called them to live. The point is, remember.

In Genesis 18, God is preparing Abraham to step out in faith and obedience and be the leader of “a great and powerful nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed through him.” Gen. 18:18 HCSB

The very next verse, we read God’s description of the leadership He expects of Abraham at home, “For I have chosen him so that he will command his children and his house after him to keep the way of the lord by doing what is right and just.” Gen. 18:19a

Abraham’s job was to command his household to “keep the way of the Lord…” His job was to stay on track personally with the Lord, and then direct, remind, and command his family to also keep on the way of God.

Moms and Dads, I want to encourage you and remind you to keep the way of the Lord personally and then to “command your children and your household to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just.” This is your God-given role as a leader in your home.

As a youth pastor, I have but a few hours each week to do that with your kids…this is why the weightiest end of this burden, is on you, as a parent, to be on the path, following Christ yourself, and then guiding your children to say on the path too! Your job is to help them remember.

As hard as it is for us to focus and remember, our kids and their ever changing minds and bodies need you to help them keep on the way to life.

Jesus said that He IS the way to keep. Then He charged all who would follow Him to pursue God’s Kingdom first over every other thing in life.

Our own hearts and our kids need to be kept on that way often.

Remember?

Praying for you and your family,

Pastor Erik

  1. Vicki Bond says:

Hey Erik! I love this message. It’s been a long time since Cooper has been to Crossline. He is in his sophomore year of college at Westminster College in Salt Lake City. His major is Aviation/Flight Operations, so he is now a pilot flying the skies of Utah. I send him scripture and messages frequently, but I think he would really be pleasantly surprised if he were to receive a little message of encouragment from you with regard to staying on God’s path. I realize you are really busy, so this request is only if and when you should have a moment to shoot out an email. His address is; cooptheshizit@yahoo.com Thanks for loving our kids, Erik. Sincerely, Vicki Bond
